Dual Enrollment – Todd Biederwolf
(WCS Executive Director of Secondary Ed)
Edward Stanton ( Macomb Community College, Manager of
Special Projects, Academic Affairs)
This is an informational campaign that
is a great opportunity for our students.
When applying for scholarships, it is difficult to obtain them and the
transition to college is also difficult for many students. However, there are hundreds of students who
attend our schools who have earned a mini scholarship through dual
enrollment. Every sophomore student
takes the PLAN test and every junior takes the ACT/MME. WCS receives money for each student from the
State of Michigan. If your child meets
the requirements through these tests, they can qualify for dual
enrollment.
To graduate from WCS, a student must
have 22.5 credits has the opportunity to earn 24 credits in their 4 years of
high school. With dual enrollment, WCS
pays tuition for college credits that they earn from their “mini scholarship”
that they receive from their scores on the assessments taken in 10th
& 11th grades. If a
student qualifies by their test scores, WCS will pay the tuition for a college
course at Macomb Community College.
Students would be responsible for their textbooks and any AP test
fees. If your student qualifies, we ask
that you talk to your children and neighbors about dual enrollment. Call your high school counselor and/or
administrator for more information.
Ed Stanton stated that WCS is the only
school district in Macomb County that is actively marketing dual enrollment to
their students. WCS is the most
innovative and creative school district and should be commended for actively
promoting dual enrollment.
College is attainable in high school and
early in their careers. Many students
can take on-line, on campus and other classes that are listed in the Macomb
Community College catalog. To enroll in
January 2009, registration starts November 11, 2008. Mr. Stanton handed out applications for
admission and Early Admission Request forms (available in the school
office). These must be submitted to the
high school counseling office and must be signed off by the school (based on
the students’ test scores). The forms
are then sent to Mr. Biederwolf for approval.
Once approved, the student must take the compass test at the college for
class placement. Then they can enroll in
class.
Classes at the college are a replacement
not an additional class. In other words,
they can only take 6 classes per semester.
There is a push by the Governor and state level to take college classes
in high school. Research states that if
students start in high school, they are more likely to continue in college post
high school. Also, taking a math course
in their senior year at MCC would fulfill the 4th year requirement
for high school requirement.
This is good for kids. WCS supports and encourages our students to
take this opportunity to advance in college if they are qualified. College schedules are currently online. The hard copy of the course guide will be
available in the schools within the next couple weeks. If you have further questions, you can
contact your school counselor, school administrator or Todd Biederwolf at 698-4759.

We currently have only a couple more

Volley ball used our concessions and owed $16.00 for supplies. It was moved by Bobbie Bacon and 2nd
by Mary Guthrie to return the $16.00 to volleyball. The band also used the concessions for MSBOA
and paid the Boosters that night for supplies used. The WMBC thanked the Boosters and especially
Julie and Wendy for all their help.

Tina Green and Dave Noble will help with the flowers for the seniors of
football, cheerleaders and dance team.
Last week we beat Cousino. This
Friday is with Stevenson.
Teacher
Kelly Collins is a teacher at Warren
Mott as well as a parent in the Siersma community. She attended the meeting to help with the
transition between the different levels from elementary to middle school
through high school. Some teachers at
Warren Mott are working on a positive merit system which will utilize raffle
tickets for acting good as well as positive post cards sent to the students. Other positive ideas include “Happy Grams”
to be available at Parent Teacher Conferences.
Administration – Kevin Griesel
October 27, 2008 – WMBC fundraiser at
Mongolian BBQ with guest cooks including several Warren Mott administrators and
teachers.
November 4, 2008 – Election Day. No school for students, faculty has a full
day.
November 13, 2008 - Parent Teacher
Conferences from 2:00 – 7:30 PM. The Wii
has been purchased for the raffle.
Mr. Griesell thanked the booster club
for of their help over the several hours of the Homecoming week.
Athletic Director – David Noble
Homecoming was also the Channel 4 Game
of the week. What an unbelievable
experience. Although a few neighbors
were upset with the early morning activities, Warren Mott had the most votes
and students ever for the station.
Usually the game of the week is a 3 minute spot; we also closed out the
morning news that morning. The
Homecoming game was one for the largest crowds with over 3000 people in
attendance. It was a great game.
Mr. Noble thanked everyone for the
tables which are already in use, as well as the chairs which have arrived for
basketball.
Football – we have qualified for the MAC
White title and secured a playoff spot.
We will find out who we will play on Fox Sport News on Sunday at 6:00 PM
on October 26th. Playoffs
will either be Friday 10/31 or Saturday 11/1 depending on who and where we
play. Boosters supplied “Mac Champs”
lanyards to the Varsity team.
New Business
Health Council – Julie Sroka asked if
anyone was interested in representing Warren Mott, if no one volunteers, she
will attend the meeting on Friday at 9:30 at the Administration Building.
Little Caesars at Dequindre and 12 Mile
has offered a fundraiser for the Class of 2009.
They will donate 10% of sales on Wednesdays to Warren Mott students/staff
(must show ID). It was suggested that
all profits go to the All Night Party 1st Gail Salyers, 2nd
Sandy Stevens.
Last month, 2 groups came to request
money from the Booster. Mr. Martin
signed the requests. However, in
checking the By-laws, Julie Sroka researched and Debbie Mazur verified the
minutes from November 19, 2007, the Booster club had approved the following
change: “9.10 – Add: No donations or reimbursements can be made to
any of the following organizations:
501C3 organizations, political groups, booster clubs, or PTO.” Mr. Martin said he would call the groups to
inform them of this by-law. Due to
unforeseen issues, he was unable to contact the groups.
WCSPA representatives discussed that
they have four productions yearly. The
spring production includes a WCS District Scholarship fundraising event. Warren Mott is not represented in the
program, whereas SHHS and CHS both have full page ads. They are requesting the same from the Warren
Mott Boosters. Currently of the 82 WCS
students in WCSPA, 28 are Warren Mott students.
Funding is getting harder and harder for everyone. The director of WCSPA was 1 0f 3 in the
country to be inducted to Hall of Fame in Chicago. The Board asked if WCSPA was 501C3, the
parents did not know. Discussion was
whether the page in the program was a donation or advertisement. It was decided it was an advertisement. Motion was the page for the WCSPA program was
advertisement and that Warren Mott Booster Club would purchase a full page
($450.00) advertisement. 1st
Cindy Ross, 2nd Mary Guthrie, Motion passed by a majority vote. Judy Hurt said she would follow up on the
design of the advertisement.
Tina Green had submitted a request to be
reimbursed for some of the $3600.00 for game jerseys for the hockey team. This is not funded by the district. They had received approval of becoming a
501C3 last week. The request is to
offset the cost of the uniforms. The
uniforms are reused and replaced as needed.
The sport is a “Pay for Play” sport.
It costs approximately $34,000 a season.
The team is comprised of all Warren Mott students. They are not a part of the WCS Unified
Team. There was much discussion about
club vs. sport, etc. After much discussion, it was decided that since the
request for the money was made in September, before they became a 501C3, and
that it had been approved by Mr. Martin before they were given the 501C3
status, the booster club would reimburse $500.00 for the hockey jerseys. 1st Mary Guthrie, 2nd
Gail Salyers. Motion passed by a
majority vote.
Discussion continued regarding the 9.10
Bylaw. It was decided to form a
committee to be less vague on the by-law.
1st Mary Guthrie, 2nd Sandy Stevens. Approved by majority vote 9:1 Brian White, Mary Guthrie and Trudy Osos will
serve on the committee.
Old Business
Texas Hold EM – request for dates has
been made, we are still waiting for dates.
