Mott Bowling Week 7 Recap

By: Coach Jerry Tarabek
January 15, 2003

Warren Mott Clinches Share of Varsity Division Crown

Both the Varsity Boys and Varsity Girls teams clinched at least a share of their respective division titles this week as both teams notched their seventh victories of the season, without a loss. The Junior Varsity boys team inched one step closer to clinching their first division title as they also won this week, defeating the girls Junior Varsity from Warren Mott.

The Boys Varsity team liked the friendly confine of Universal Lanes, our home house, and showed it as they posted a second best 1145 team game in the first team match play. Lead by Brian "Pond" Lake, who pushed the perfect envelope with the first 11 strikes, ending with a 298 game, captain Jon "Smokey" Kennedy (238), average leader Justin "Danger" Neiman (226), Paul "Lefty" Narlock (220) and Chris "Shaggy" Lepkowski (203) the boys posted another solid victory by defeating arch rival Sterling Heights 26-4. The boys have been trying to make the baker games a focus of improvement and they did that by shooting their third straight 200 game (234). The boys next meet Warren Cousino and could lock up first place with a win next week.

The Girls Varsity team had a tougher time of it this week, even though the point totals don't reflect it as they downed Sterling Heights 29-1. The victory, coupled with a Chippewa Valley loss assures a tie for the division title this season. Last year the ladies finished in second place at 8-2, with the only losses coming against the unbeaten and first place Ferndale team. This team is primarily sophomores and in the two years they have been together they have posted a 15-2 record. This week it was captain Nikki Wilczek's turn to lead the way as she put together games of 161 and 158. As a general rule, the team won in spite of making a lot of mistakes, especially when it came to making spares. Kim and Lindsay Felix continue to be in the top three in individual points this season while Nicole Griebe saw her unbeaten streak come to an end in the second game this week.

The boys Junior Varsity team met the Girls Junior Varsity team this week in a much-anticipated match up. The boys were feeling pretty confident as they entered the arena but the ladies had them sweating more than just a little bit before it was over. The boys prevailed, overall, 28-2 but Jessica Biernacki stopped the undefeated streak of Keven Beasley with a match play victory in the second game (174-167). Veronica Wineski also defeated Kris Smith (170-125) for the other girls' point of the night. The boys were lead by John Breaugh (172), Mike Kusmierz (168) and Kyle Kovach (161). The boys junior varsity moved its record to 6.5 - 0.5 and still leads the Junior Varsity Division with three weeks remaining. The girls team dropped its record to 2-5 and tied with Warren Woods Tower for 6th place.

This past weekend, the girls and boys varsity teams competed in the first annual Macomb County Meet at Sunnybrook Lanes. The boys made the cut at qualifying as the number three seed but were ousted in the first round of eliminations by Macomb Dakota. The ladies however, made it through the qualifying and all the way to the semi-finals before being ousted by Sterling Height Stevenson. The girls lost in the consolation match to Anchor Bay but wound up fourth and received a nice plaque to commemorate the event. Congratulations to the teams and I know they are looking forward to the next tournament, February 2nd at Sterling Lanes for the Conference Invitational.

Don't forget about the moonlight no-tap fundraiser event on February 22nd at Universal Lanes. You can call to reserve for one or any number of people but call and reserve. Last year the spots started filling early so the sooner you call the better your chance of getting the lanes you want. Contact Coach Tarabek for your reservations at 586-264-0432.
