Southeast Division Singles Qualifier

By: Coach Jerry Tarabek
February 13, 2003

On Wednesday, February 12th the Southeast Division rolled into Rosebowl Lanes for the Divisional Singles qualifying event to find the best of the best to represent the division at the regional singles events. The conditions were a bit different for many of the kids, as they did not see the larger amounts of oil as they had been used to over the course of the season. This opened the door for some surprises when the final results came in.

On the boy's varsity side, Jason Kavanagh from Chippewa Valley found the lanes to his liking, as he was the top qualifier shooting a four game total of 887. Jason had averaged 199 for the past season and showed why he was one of the division leaders in scoring this season. Justin Neiman of Warren Mott, who shot the high game of the qualifier with a 278, was second with an 880 series while his teammate from Warren Mott, Jon Kennedy was third with an 867 series. Matt Leitch of Sterling Heights, one of the mild surprises, posted a fine 847 series for fourth place and Ryan Roberts from Chippewa Valley rounded out the top five by shooting a very consistent 842 series. The balance of the boys varsity qualifiers, 18 in total, include Brian Lake (Warren Mott - 834), Chad Golden (Chippewa Valley - 788), Jonathan Stevens (Macomb Dakota - 779), Mike Felcyn (Macomb Dakota - 774), Kurtis Krautner (Sterling Heights - 770), Mike Lozier (Chippewa Valley - 762), Dustin Prytula (Warren Woods Tower - 753), Josh Jablonski (Sterling Heights - 742), Jon Baich (Macomb Dakota - 740), Sean Burns (Warren Woods Tower - 738), Steve Bauer (Warren Cousino - 735), John Rozich (Sterling Heights - 727) and Chris Lowry (Macomb Dakota - 696). The most relieved guy in the group was John Rozich of Sterling Heights, as he sat holding his head hoping to hear his name, he did at 17th position.

On the girls varsity side a number of surprises showed up starting right at the top with Jessica Tyler from Warren Mott taking the number one qualifier position with a series of 664. Jessica could be seen high-fiving anyone close as her name was announced as the top scorer. Katie Burrows of Macomb Dakota was next with a 656 series. Katie found the lanes to her liking and her high game of the season with a 223 along the way. Third Place went to Nicole Wichmann of Chippewa Valley who rolled a solid 639 series while fourth place went to Warren Mott's team captain, Nikki Wilczek who fired a 633. Rounding out the top five was Jessica Kunnath of Warren Woods Tower. Jessica took advantage of being at her home house and rolled her high game of the season of 168 on her way to posting a 620 series. The balance of the girls varsity qualifiers, 18 in all, started with Nicole Griebe (Warren Mott-612), Melissa Paul (Warren Cousino-612), Rachael Wright (Warren Woods Tower-591), Stephanie Methvin (Macomb Dakota-591), Lindsay Felix (Warren Mott-577), Beth Roberts (Chippewa Valley-575), Amber Gala (Warren Woods Tower-573), Katie Dominik (Chippewa Valley-567), Carissa Longo (Chippewa Valley-566), Aimee Melliza (Sterling Heights-565), Erica Jaskowski (Warren Cousino-555), Shannon Collins (Macomb Dakota-549) and Ann Laszczyk (Sterling Heights-544).

The boys' junior varsity side posted a solid showing from the Warren Mott team as they took seven of the fifteen qualifying positions. Top qualifier position went to Darryl Sage of Warren Mott as he posted a couple of 220+ scores to come in with a 639 for his three game series. Darryl's 225 game was his best for the season. Second place went to Chad Prytula of Warren Woods Tower who shot 590, third place was Jason Pointer of Macomb Dakota with a 558, fourth went to Damon Betterton of Sterling Heights who shot 553, including a season best 225 game and fifth position went to Kevin Bochenek of Warren Cousino, also shooting a season best 207, with a 531 series.

That left only one school with out a qualifier for regionals, Chippewa Valley. Since the junior varsity qualifying includes one person from each school, the bowler with the best score from each school would automatically qualify for the regional event. Chippewa Valley's top qualifier was Derek Yelinek who shot a 180 his last game to come in with a 474 series and make the qualifying list. The balance of the qualifiers came from the next best nine scores, of which Warren Mott's boys took six of the positions. The rest of the qualifiers are John Breaugh (Warren Mott-582), Jeff Peltier (Warren Mott-580), Kristopher Smith (Warren Mott-578), Michael Kusmierz (Warren Mott-563), Kyle Kovach (Warren Mott-536), Darius Alexander (Macomb Dakota-533), Anthony Godell (Sterling Heights-526), Keven Beasley (Warren Mott-520) and Chris Sadowski (Macomb Dakota-520). The competition was tough on the boys' junior varsity division side as some of the higher average bowlers throughout the season came up a little short in the qualifier and did not make it to the regional event.

On the girl's junior varsity side, since only one girl's team bowls in our division, the top three qualifiers came from Warren Mott. Jessica Biernacki rolled a solid 451 series to become the top qualifier while Veronica Wineski was second with a 420 series. Rounding out the top three was Jessica Hendrix who shot a consist ant 381 for her three game totals.

Congratulations to all of our qualifiers and best of luck as you move forward to represent the Southeast Division at the regional events. All of the results are now posted on the web site, highschoolbowling.com, and it includes the final results from everyone who participated in all four divisions.

Look forward to seeing everyone at the team divisional qualifier at Sunnybrook Lanes on Friday, February 14th at 3:45 PM.
